Season of the Yew

By |2026-03-18T19:23:57-04:00January 31st, 2026|Musings|

Now we have entered the season of the Yew tree - sentinel of death and the graveyard, rebirth and eternity.   English Yew Tree   This is likewise the Cailleach’s time. She brings us her wisdom as the old crone who presides over death. She is the storm, and the ancient creator of the land. She is the cold and the ice, the Queen of winter.     The yew and the Cailleach are part ...

Moving forward with EGLEs requirements, yesterday we had a wetland specialist come out to do a survey, which will be part of what we will be submitting for the permit process. We are doing our best throughout this process to show EGLE that our intent is for land regeneration, as well as for giving opportunities for the public to experience and learn from the restored land. (EGLE is the State of Michigan's department of Environment, Great Lakes, ...

At a Crossroads

By |2026-03-18T19:23:36-04:00January 31st, 2026|News|

Recently I mentioned that we have been in the process of assessing where we're at with things at Crossing Hedgerows. This summer's flood was one of the reasons for that, with it putting us out of commission for quite some time. It is the worst flood we have had, and caused us to really look at the feasibility of our plans and the design we've been working towards for the land.     Along with the flood, ...

Crossing Hedgerows Cat Sanctuary 🐈‍⬛

By |2026-03-18T18:02:30-04:00January 31st, 2026|Fauna, Sanctuary Cats|

Though we have not used any of the nonprofit funds directly for this, I wanted to share with you that your support does indirectly provide assistance for the many cats that are regularly dropped off at the farm. We have a steady stream of them that we feed, and we find homes for as many as possible, because our local shelters are all full.     Last night we found a mother cat and her kitten sheltering ...

https://youtu.be/I9Z8vA-7B3Q   The asters are now in full bloom and the bees are loving them! However the mosquitoes are still quite the nuisance and we are going to need to cancel our meet up for this weekend again. 🥺 In the meantime though, I have been continuing to put together plans for ways to have meaningful connection with the land and each other when we are able to meet again… so that we can keep creating ...

Flood – This Sunday’s Meet Up Cancelled

By |2026-03-18T19:22:10-04:00January 31st, 2026|Birds, News|

Hi Everyone, Last night we had the biggest flood event we've had here to date. Most of the land is flooded, including our chicken coops, hoop house, sheds, and some of our garage. But thankfully NOT our house or basement. We spent a good part of the day getting our chickens situated as best we could, by adding tables into the coops (with their food and water on them), for them to stand on, along with their ...

Circle Meet-Ups are Off to a Great Start!

By |2026-03-18T19:21:32-04:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations, Holistic Health|

This Sunday, we had a great discussion of the energy of Fire and how it is at work both within ourselves and on the land. For our activity, we made corn husk dolls to keep in our homes to remind us over the winter of the powerful energies of sunshine, sexuality, and creativity found in the spirit of grain. They will be a reminder of the capacity we all hold within ourselves for inspiration and flow in ...

Buttonbush

By |2026-03-18T19:20:34-04:00January 31st, 2026|Birds, Flora|

By Brennah Cavanaugh, Board Member of Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary   Buttonbush is a bush with very unique looking flower clusters that are almost perfectly spherical. Its flowers are adored by pollinators of all sorts, but due to the long tube-like shape of the individual flowers in the cluster they are especially attractive to pollinators with longer tongues, like butterflies, bumble bees, and hummingbirds. (The unusual shape of the flowers make them attractive to humans, too!) It is ...

Looking Back

By |2026-03-18T19:19:04-04:00January 31st, 2026|News|

Hi Everyone! I apologize for the delay in posting. I have been working on a project needed by EGLE for getting our permits to do the permaculture landscaping for the pond and gathering areas that we've been working on these last several years. After going through an engineering company for our first meeting with EGLE earlier this spring, Dan and I were given a quote by the engineer for $11,000 to do a "forensic wetland analysis" to ...

Sunrise - July 1st, 2023: A distinctive purple glow over the stone circleAs we head into July, I want to thank you all for your continued support of Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary. Though we haven't been having as many events this year, the land continues to heal and is teaming with ever more life. Sometimes the bird song is almost deafening around here, and the varieties of insects, and animals passing through are too many to list. Yet ...

Into the Woods

By |2026-03-18T19:18:38-04:00January 31st, 2026|Birds, Flora, Musings|

Today I took a short video so you can see what the woods are looking like right now. At the end you can hear a plane flying low overhead, as the Sanctuary is not too far from Detroit Metro airport.   https://youtu.be/y7gwtDCswo4   Our world is constantly becoming more and more developed even in areas that are zoned for agriculture. Farm fields across the road from the Sanctuary are currently being partitioned off and sold for ...
