Events & Celebrations at Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary

The Events & Celebrations category gathers together the living rhythm of Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary — the ceremonies, seasonal gatherings, and community rituals that mark the turning of the year and the deepening of our shared spiritual life. These are not performances or spectacles. They are participatory, intentional, and rooted in the sacred order revealed through nature, the heavens, and the Mystery School tradition.

At Crossing Hedgerows, celebration follows the pattern of creation itself. We honor the solstices and equinoxes, the cross-quarter days such as Imbolc and Samhain, and the holy days of the Christian calendar — not as separate traditions in competition with one another, but as different expressions of the same divine pattern. The birth of the Light at winter solstice, the stirring of renewal at Imbolc, the harvest and remembrance at Samhuinn, and the mystical beauty of Christmas are all reflections of one ongoing story: the eternal return of Light within darkness, and the invitation to awaken to Christ within.

Our gatherings often take place in the stone circle, in the hoophouse, or outdoors among the woods and gardens of the sanctuary’s twenty-one acres. We walk sunwise around the circle. We bless with fire and water. We gather in community — young and old together — recognizing that the Mysteries are not reserved for scholars alone, but are written plainly in the sky above us, the land beneath our feet, and the geometry of creation itself.

Children are welcomed into active roles in our ceremonies. They carry candles. They help bless the circle. They sing, craft, and participate alongside elders. We believe that when young hearts are introduced to sacred symbolism through loving community, the seeds of wisdom are planted naturally and joyfully. Education at Crossing Hedgerows is experiential and embodied — not abstract theory, but direct encounter.

Music, poetry, and handmade craft are woven throughout our celebrations. A simple carol sung together. A Brighid’s cross fashioned from reeds. A shared potluck meal prepared with care and labeled thoughtfully for those with allergies. Bonfires beneath the autumn sky. Each act, though humble, carries symbolic meaning. The circle reminds us of eternity. The eight points reflect the wheel of the year. The central stone anchors us in Christ, the Logos — the still center around which all creation turns.

These events are designed not merely to commemorate dates on a calendar, but to cultivate awareness. Why do we move clockwise? Why do we call it sunwise? Why are there cross-quarters every forty days? Why do fire and water appear again and again in sacred rites? Through ceremony, we begin asking deeper questions. And through questioning, we rediscover gnosis — lived understanding — rather than inherited assumption.

Community is at the heart of these gatherings. Families bring dishes to share. Stories are exchanged. Children run through the fields. Elders speak quietly near the fire. In times of joy and in times of challenge, we hold one another in love. Even updates about sanctuary life — from planting paw paw seeds to caring for beloved animals — become part of this rhythm of shared life. Celebration does not ignore hardship; it weaves it into prayer, gratitude, and hope.

There is also a deliberate slowing down here. As the darker months arrive, we are reminded to turn inward. The sanctuary’s events are offered with intention and care, never rushed. Jean and her family prepare each gathering thoughtfully, creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, beautiful, and spiritually grounded. Donations and community support make these offerings possible, allowing the work to continue in integrity.

Above all, our Events & Celebrations reflect a central truth: the order of the heavens mirrors the order within the soul. The light that returns at solstice is the same light that can be rekindled in the human heart. The renewal hinted at in early spring is the renewal always available to us through repentance, love, and awakening. Each ceremony becomes a gentle reminder that Christ’s presence is not distant or delayed — it is alive, cyclical, and ever unfolding.

Whether you are joining us in person at the stone circle or reading reflections from afar, this category offers glimpses into a community seeking to live awake within God’s beautiful creation. We welcome you to explore, to question, and perhaps to gather with us as we continue walking the Way together.

Saturday Work Day

By |2026-03-09T01:50:52+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations|

It was great to have Alyssa and daughter, Allie come out on Saturday for a work day. They finished harvesting the garlic scapes, weeded a flower bed, and dug and planted a bed of thyme plants which we started from seeds earlier this spring. They also helped me transplant a paw paw tree seedling to a wetter area where it will hopefully be happier.         Between chores, we sampled some of my elderflower cordial ...

Volunteering

By |2026-03-10T01:47:16+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations|

On Thursdays we have a volunteer work day from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm. I wish I had gotten pictures of our trail-blazing crew yesterday, but as sometimes happens, I was caught up in the moment, and I think everyone else was too. We had marked out a trail beforehand, putting stakes in to show the way, and our crew of Caitlin, Sarenth, Brandon, Brennah, and I headed out with a machete, a saw, a couple ...

May’s Member Gathering

By |2026-03-01T03:30:34+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations|

We had a nice turnout and gorgeous weather for our May gathering. These pictures are mainly from the bonfire and potluck portion of the day. We had egg salad made with eggs from Crossing Hedgerows Farm, crackers, potato chips, and Rhubarb Strawberry Crumble made from our farm fresh rhubarb. Doug also brought a Lentil Salad (made by his wife Pat) that was scrumptious. And Alissa brought a wonderful Rhubarb Mead. But before all that we had a great ...

Hoophouse Tour

By |2026-03-01T03:30:34+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations, Musings|

In our May gathering, one of the areas we walked through on our tour was the hoophouse. When we look at growing crops through the lens of healthy ecosystems, it requires that we think of all the elements involved and what they want and need to be healthy. Some of the things I touched on during the tour, is how we allow for little "wild" areas within the hoophouse where snakes can hide, to keep the rodents under ...

In this photo, the white banty hen is trying to shelter all her grown chicks under her wings. A banty hen is a type which is smaller than regular hens. The chicks in the picture are not bantys, but the banty mama sat on the eggs from other hens and raised the chicks as her own.Happy Mother's Day to all the Mamas of the world!

April’s Member Walk

By |2026-03-01T03:30:34+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations, Musings|

We had another gathering for members this past Sunday. The afternoon was bright and crisp and gorgeous. Though the morning had been overcast and chilly, it turned into one of those days where the air is cool but the sun is warm, and they offset each other perfectly. There had been a few others who had been planning to come, but they were waylaid at the last minute with one thing or another. So it was an intimate ...

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.   ~ Lao TzuYesterday we had another lovely Member Walk and Bonfire, which I will share some pictures from soon. We had a small ritual in the woods together, while the Red-Winged Blackbirds loudly serenaded us. A big thank you to members, such as Alissa Addy, who have spread the word to friends so that more people can be aware of all that we are offering here at the Farm and ...

Making Nest Boxes for Kestrels and Screech Owls

By |2026-03-07T05:19:28+02:00January 31st, 2026|Birds, Events & Celebrations, News|

This past Saturday, Dan, Caitlin, and Brennah had a fun time working on making nest boxes for kestrels and screech owls. We've seen these raptors around occasionally and would like to make a place for them to raise their young each year. Not only are they lovely birds in their own right, we're hoping they'll help keep the farm rodent population under control. We have regular work days every Thursday and Saturday (however we haven't had much interest ...

Member Walk and Bonfire

By |2026-03-01T03:30:34+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations|

On Sunday we had a refreshing walk and bonfire, with new members and old. Having it delayed from the previous week did allow a couple more people to join us, so that was wonderful. Though we didn't get any pictures of the group, it was a great time of connecting with each other and the land. There are already a few people signed up for our next one on the last Sunday of March (the 28th) at ...

February's walk has been postponed to this coming Sunday, March 7th at 2:00 pm.  To make up for it though, I am sharing a few photos that Brennah took around the farm and sanctuary on March 4th of last year. And also, maybe this will allow for a few more people to make it at the new time.May you live and love in joyful awareness each day.Jean

Hello everyone, just a reminder that Sunday, February 28th at 2:00 pm will be our next Community Walk and Bonfire. We are forecast to have some warmer weather between now and then, so I expect much of the snow will be melted. Here are a few pictures of what it looks like currently. Don't forget that as a member, you may come visit the Sanctuary at any time. We only ask that you please notify us ahead of ...

Bonfires, Story-telling, Music & Dance

By |2026-03-01T03:30:34+02:00January 31st, 2026|Events & Celebrations|

Before the idea of the Sanctuary was born, the Cavanaugh family held a monthly Potluck/Bonfire that included music, story-telling and dance. Everyone always had a lot of fun and they continued for about three years. One of our most regular attendees was Doug Pierce. He has been a dear friend from the beginning of our time back in Michigan, and was glad to jump in and help with getting the Sanctuary off the ground. Sarenth and his family ...

This past Thursday we had another of our community gatherings, which previously were our workdays, but lately have turned into bonfires and walks in the woods. It seems fitting for those of us who have worked at the Sanctuary throughout the year, to have some down time together.  We are looking forward to our member Walk and Talk coming up this Sunday. We do have a few people signed up, but have room for a couple more ...
