You Are Enough

"My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird –equal seekers of sweetness. Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?Am I no longer young and still not half-perfect? Let mekeep my mind on what matters, which is my work, which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished. The phoebe, the delphinium. The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.Which is mostly rejoicing, since ...

Trail to the Pond Site by Brennah Cavanaugh Photography LLCThe snow storm we had earlier this month left the shrubs and plants so weighed down that some of the trails became almost impassable. But not completely so, as Dan found when he decided to crawl through because our dog was so insistent on going on his usual walk! Photos by Dan Cavanaugh - Walking the DogI wanted to share these pictures of the Sanctuary in all its winter ...

Cardinal Season

By |2026-03-13T00:37:52-04:00January 31st, 2026|Birds, Flora|

Cardinals and Forsythia BushThis is the time of year when we see whole flocks of cardinals around the farm and sanctuary. Today we have a fresh covering of snow and the cardinals are so beautiful against the white (and dull greens and browns) of winter. Five cardinals (three males and two females) in a cedar treeBirds are a high priority for us at Crossing Hedgerows. Many of the perennial trees, bushes, and herbs we have planted are not ...

Spring Snow 4/20/21

For the most part, the photos will speak for themselves. We had a similar snowstorm last year about a week earlier than this one. Looking at the pictures from that one, it seems that the blossoms on the fruit trees were not out quite as much. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that this doesn't harm the fruit production here in SE Michigan. We prepared as best we could by bringing some of our more sensitive seed trays ...

Season of Imbolc

By |2026-04-01T02:03:24-04:00February 24th, 2021|Birds, Musings|

Last week this bird's nest was full of snow. This week the snow is melting fast. And a couple of days ago when I stepped out onto the back patio, I saw the biggest fattest robin I have ever seen. Imbolc gives us the promise of springtime as the light continues to grow.   bird's nest with a large mound of snow in it - photo by Brennah Cavanaugh   Blessings from the Sanctuary, Jean Phot

Hello everyone, just a reminder that Sunday, February 28th at 2:00 pm will be our next Community Walk and Bonfire. We are forecast to have some warmer weather between now and then, so I expect much of the snow will be melted. Here are a few pictures of what it looks like currently.   Animal tracks making a trail through the snow past a Juniper tree   Animal tracks making a trail through the ...

Where the Wild Things Are

By |2026-03-31T02:17:00-04:00February 7th, 2021|Fauna|

There are many non-human creatures that also enjoy the trails at Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary. Here are a few of their tracks that Brennah Cavanaugh photographed the other day. These are turkey, coyote, and some tiny rodent - perhaps a mouse. We've seen quite a lot of other kinds of footprints as well. It's certainly a joy to provide a habitat where plenty of wild things are able to find refuge.       Many Blessings from ...
