Events & Celebrations at Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary

The Events & Celebrations category gathers together the living rhythm of Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary — the ceremonies, seasonal gatherings, and community rituals that mark the turning of the year and the deepening of our shared spiritual life. These are not performances or spectacles. They are participatory, intentional, and rooted in the sacred order revealed through nature, the heavens, and the Mystery School tradition.

At Crossing Hedgerows, celebration follows the pattern of creation itself. We honor the solstices and equinoxes, the cross-quarter days such as Imbolc and Samhain, and the holy days of the Christian calendar — not as separate traditions in competition with one another, but as different expressions of the same divine pattern. The birth of the Light at winter solstice, the stirring of renewal at Imbolc, the harvest and remembrance at Samhuinn, and the mystical beauty of Christmas are all reflections of one ongoing story: the eternal return of Light within darkness, and the invitation to awaken to Christ within.

Our gatherings often take place in the stone circle, in the hoophouse, or outdoors among the woods and gardens of the sanctuary’s twenty-one acres. We walk sunwise around the circle. We bless with fire and water. We gather in community — young and old together — recognizing that the Mysteries are not reserved for scholars alone, but are written plainly in the sky above us, the land beneath our feet, and the geometry of creation itself.

Children are welcomed into active roles in our ceremonies. They carry candles. They help bless the circle. They sing, craft, and participate alongside elders. We believe that when young hearts are introduced to sacred symbolism through loving community, the seeds of wisdom are planted naturally and joyfully. Education at Crossing Hedgerows is experiential and embodied — not abstract theory, but direct encounter.

Music, poetry, and handmade craft are woven throughout our celebrations. A simple carol sung together. A Brighid’s cross fashioned from reeds. A shared potluck meal prepared with care and labeled thoughtfully for those with allergies. Bonfires beneath the autumn sky. Each act, though humble, carries symbolic meaning. The circle reminds us of eternity. The eight points reflect the wheel of the year. The central stone anchors us in Christ, the Logos — the still center around which all creation turns.

These events are designed not merely to commemorate dates on a calendar, but to cultivate awareness. Why do we move clockwise? Why do we call it sunwise? Why are there cross-quarters every forty days? Why do fire and water appear again and again in sacred rites? Through ceremony, we begin asking deeper questions. And through questioning, we rediscover gnosis — lived understanding — rather than inherited assumption.

Community is at the heart of these gatherings. Families bring dishes to share. Stories are exchanged. Children run through the fields. Elders speak quietly near the fire. In times of joy and in times of challenge, we hold one another in love. Even updates about sanctuary life — from planting paw paw seeds to caring for beloved animals — become part of this rhythm of shared life. Celebration does not ignore hardship; it weaves it into prayer, gratitude, and hope.

There is also a deliberate slowing down here. As the darker months arrive, we are reminded to turn inward. The sanctuary’s events are offered with intention and care, never rushed. Jean and her family prepare each gathering thoughtfully, creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, beautiful, and spiritually grounded. Donations and community support make these offerings possible, allowing the work to continue in integrity.

Above all, our Events & Celebrations reflect a central truth: the order of the heavens mirrors the order within the soul. The light that returns at solstice is the same light that can be rekindled in the human heart. The renewal hinted at in early spring is the renewal always available to us through repentance, love, and awakening. Each ceremony becomes a gentle reminder that Christ’s presence is not distant or delayed — it is alive, cyclical, and ever unfolding.

Whether you are joining us in person at the stone circle or reading reflections from afar, this category offers glimpses into a community seeking to live awake within God’s beautiful creation. We welcome you to explore, to question, and perhaps to gather with us as we continue walking the Way together.

Happy Imbolc and Candlemas!

Imbolc falls on February 2nd this year. It's the cross quarter between the winter solstice and spring equinox - the halfway point between them. The light is growing and this is when I actually always begin to notice the days becoming slightly longer. So it makes sense to celebrate with candles as the tiny light from Christmas grows stronger and we nurture this tiny light within ourselves as well. We may be getting impatient at this time ...
