About Jean Cavanaugh

Jean Cavanaugh is the founder and steward of Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary, established in 2019 as a living, learning community devoted to reconnecting people with the wisdom of nature, the sacred order of creation, and the presence of Christ within all life. Her work brings together spiritual formation, ecological stewardship, ancestral wisdom, and hands-on community practice. Through years of practical work on the land, study of the Mysteries, and the healing of her own severe health challenges through natural methods, Jean has come to recognize God’s hand at work throughout creation. Her teachings, rooted in the Mystery School tradition and Christian gnosis, explore how the patterns of heaven, earth, and the human body reveal the way back to divine presence, peace, and inner strength. Jean leads with honesty, integrity, and a deeply welcoming spirit, inviting others to let go of inherited assumptions and rediscover truth through lived experience and embodied understanding. She works with all ages—from preschoolers to elders—offering programs and celebrations that emphasize direct engagement with nature, music, story, homesteading skills, and in-person community. She and her family live at the 21-acre Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary, where daily life reflects a commitment to simplicity, beauty, and harmony with the land. The sanctuary includes gardens, woodland trails, a seasonal creek, gathering circles, and spaces designed to nourish both people and wildlife. Jean is especially passionate about creating environments that are grounding, beautiful, and spiritually restorative. Through her writing and teaching, Jean encourages others to know themselves, know creation, and recognize Christ as the living truth present within and around us—always inviting a return to love, beauty, and the sacred order of life.

I bought this plaque back in 1988 in a little shop in Cambridge England when I was there for a study abroad program. Though I was drawn to the plaque, at the time I had no idea the deep meaning behind it. I was taking a Shakespeare class and an English history class that summer at Cambridge University, so the knight felt like it kind of fit into the general theme. The other day, I took ...

The gods and goddesses tell us about eternal truths. We can see these truths in the ancient myths told about the constellations and the movements of the luminaries, as well as within our own bodies and lives, and the events of the world around us. The mythology found regarding the heavens and its relationship to earth and people are timeless tales which tell the same stories in different ways throughout time amongst a multitude of cultures. Hi Everyone! I wanted to show a few pictures from my last meetup that I had set up for someone who RSVPd but didn't show up. This is not at all to chastise anyone... only to show that each meetup is curated with love and care, and time and effort to make it as wonderful as possible. As you can see from the pictures, I went ahead and enjoyed myself with making the art. And my family ...

The God Question

By |2026-03-19T01:38:34-04:00January 31st, 2026|Musings|

I used to think this was not all that important a question. One God, many Gods, no God... as long as people had good ethics, it didn't really matter. But guess what? Truth matters. And we can actually know the truth. That's what I've been delving into a lot lately. Gnosis. Not simply personal gnosis, but verifiable, provable, information that is all around us in nature. Permaculture teaches us to see patterns. It's the foundation for permaculture ...

The Power of Belief

What I teach and write about here may seem eclectic, but there is a central theme running through all of it. The way we can treat the land, our homes, our bodies, and each other in a generative way... all of our well-being stems from understanding the deeper mysteries of the realm we live in. The beliefs we hold (along with the ability to discern truth) are more powerful than anything else. When this is filtered through ...

Saturday, May 17th at 3pm Hi everyone! Happy Beltaine! Last year I began our Beltaine ceremony with the words: "In the center burn the fires of Beltaine. Man and Woman: Goddess and God: Stars and Earth: each in each one of us." This is what Beltaine is all about... the alchemical wedding of opposites, in which we merge from within the center of ourselves the opposite forces, thus giving us the ability of inspired creation - just ...

Food Forest Guild Part 2   https://youtube.com/shorts/B8-CbCzNysw?feature=share   * The word “guild” in this usage is a group of plants that can thrive together as you would find in a forest habitat. It has the layers found in a forest - tree, shrub, herbaceous, ground cover, and sometimes even vines. The different plants all serve various purposes… edible, pollinator friendly, medicinal, windbreak, etc. This weekend we are celebrating Christ's resurrection. It’s lovely how the plants ...
