Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary was founded by Jean Cavanaugh in 2019 as a community gathering place dedicated to teaching those who are seeking to live in alignment with natural systems and who also desire to uphold the spiritual principles and ethics learned through the close interaction with these systems. Through the study of The Mysteries, as well as practical ecological work on the land for many years, and the process of healing her own severe health issues by natural methods, Jean has found God’s hand to be at work in all of creation. Her teachings within the Mystery School tradition show how the order of the heavens and the earth, and our own bodies give us the keys to finding our way back home to Christ’s divine presence within us and our lives. This provides us with peace, joy, and the strength to face whatever challenges come our way.
Jean leads the way with honesty, integrity and a loving heart, welcoming all who are ready to let go of past programming to understand the world from their own sense making and felt experience of reality. She enjoys working with all ages, from preschoolers to elders. Both children’s and adult’s programs and celebrations involve hands-on activities and direct interaction with ancestral wisdom, nature, music, stories, homesteading, and in person community.
Jean homeschooled her own children through all their schooling years, and has worked with her husband and family to adopt a lifestyle that embraces living more slowly and in harmony with the land which sustains us. At their 21 acre homestead and sanctuary, there is a composting outhouse, woods, a seasonal creek with a bridge, trails, a large hoophouse, a fire circle, a stone circle, as well as botanical gardens and a variety of wildlife. Jean loves creating spaces that are beautiful and nourishing to all who visit the Sanctuary.

Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary is building community with a focus on connecting with God/Nature, and our own inner wisdom. Understanding the timeless truths taught throughout the various mystery school traditions gives us a firm foundation to remember who we are and why we are here. We emphasize the Gnostic Christian mystery tradition because it is the most complete, with fully intact holy scriptures in the English language that fully point the way towards enlightenment. Through the study of this esoteric and occulted knowledge, with always a focus on every action coming from love and the heart, we prepare ourselves to receive the gift of “the way, the truth, and the life”.
Our mission likewise is to develop and maintain our land through regenerative practices and permaculture design, so it may be a center for a variety of activities and programs for the community. These include seasonal celebrations, community potlucks, music, story-telling, workshops for various skills, crafts, and arts, community gardening, and gatherings for working with various holistic healing modalities. As a member of the Botanical Sanctuary Network, we likewise have a focus on the conservation of rare, endangered, and native species of plants and the insects which accompany them. We are open to sharing this space with all who are respectful of the land.
We facilitate these activities by exchanging use of the Sanctuary for work days and/or a sliding-scale yearly paid membership, and/or fees for individual programs and workshops.
